Karen Althouse - Minister
Ministry has been part of my life from a young age. My ministerial status is one of a Synodically Authorized Lay Minister (S.A.L.M.), a special degree offered by the Lutheran Church following completion of a two-year course that included internships and leadership positions in various congregations. I became the regular Minister here at Friedens in 2017.
Before joining the ministry, I gave piano, flute and voice lessons. All this while being on numerous committees in my home church and serving as a supply preacher for various churches in the Reading area. I have a son, Matthew, who is a wonderful graphic artist, a computer programmer, and outstanding photographer.
I cannot tell you how blessed I am to be at Friedens. It is a very inviting congregation that I love deeply. God is in this place. I invite you to join us.
Barbara Kuhns - Administrative Assistant
I was raised UCC in a church not far from here (Epler’s Church United Church of Christ). I am currently their part-time Church Administrator. I just recently retired from the Hope Rescue Mission. Prior to that, I worked for 25 years at Wyomissing Church of the Brethren as their Administrative Assistant, and I currently serve as a pianist at Oley Valley Mennonite Church.
I am married to my best friend Rick, and September 18, 2023, marks the celebration of our 13th wedding anniversary. Together we have 1 son and 2 daughters, 2 granddaughters, and 1 great-grandson. Family is everything to us and we love getting together on holidays and birthdays, etc.
Rick and I LOVE camping. We go to local campgrounds. We have a Class C motorhome – which is why we call it “Glamping”, not camping. We also love dirt track racing as spectators. We have been to many tracks in PA and out of state.
My mother was one of 17 children, so I have many, many cousins. Some still stay in touch. My father was one of 7 children. They have gone to be with the Lord, and I miss them every day.
Thank you for having faith in me to serve as your Administrative Assistant.
